The Most Common Myths About

Back Pain

You've Been Told By Doctors, Friends and Social Media That Keep You In Pain and Taking Pills

If you’re over 40 and have back pain, chances are you’ve heard it all before. From friends and family to doctors, everyone has an opinion about back pain and how best to treat it. Unfortunately, many of these opinions are outdated myths that could actually be making your back pain worse.

Here are some of the most common back pain myths our patients have been told which has actually made their back pain and sciatica much worse, and delayed their recovery from injuries.

MYTH #1 - REST IS BEST
Resting is the worst thing you can do for your back pain. There are other areas where you might experience pain and sometimes rest is okay for these, but in relation to back pain, it's the worst thing you can do. The more you rest, the more weakness you create surrounding the area of your back. You should keep moving and staying active to help your back pain. Bed rest may help on the rare occassion help back pain go away, but it won’t fix the problem long-term. In nearly all cases, it will come back again, and often gets worse the more time passes. That’s why you need to get expert help to address the root cause of your back pain, so you aren’t trapped continually treating the symptoms.
MYTH #2 - A HERNIATED DISC IS THE CAUSE OF BACK PAIN
A lot of people believe that if they have a herniated disc they are bound to suffer from back pain. It's complete nonsense. Yes, it may be associated with your pain, but the chances are it is not causing your pain. Less than 5% of people I've seen in my career had back pain caused by their herniated discs. There were 95% of people I've seen who had a herniated disc that did not cause their back pain. So it is an absolute myth about back pain. But after working with lots of people in the 50s, 60s and beyond who are enjoying a very active life, this is not true. Instead, I prefer to go by the saying, you get stiff then you get old! Because this myth is so ingrained within our society, you’re often told to slow down, work out less, and ease up on your sports and hobbies as you get older. This approach leads you to becoming weaker, stiffer, and unable to do the things you did 10 years ago. However, if you keep moving, you keep your body and muscles stay lubricated and loose so that you can feel strong, and mobile, and continue doing those activities that you love, even when society is telling you you should be calling it quits.
MYTH #3 - BACK PAIN IS A NORMAL PART OF AGING
It drives me nuts when I hear from people that back pain is a normal part of aging, because it's absolutely not. I did my own studies and research that show that age has absolutely nothing to do with your back pain. If you are getting back pain, most likely your glutes are not strong enough. How strong your glutes are is correlated with how much back pain you're getting. The stronger the glutes, the stronger the back. Back pain is not a normal part of aging, it's a symptom of your butt getting weak. When you're older, you tend to sit for longer and get less active which weakens your glutes. However, there are many active people in their 80s who don't have back pain because they are active and have strong glutes. So age doesn't reflect on your back pain, the lack of activity does.
MYTH #4 - INJECTIONS HELP YOUR BACK
The most annoying myth I hear about back pain is that injections will fix your back. Injections are not the right solution for back pain problems. It can help you get pain relief in the short-term, but it won't fix the root cause of your problem. Injections are likely to lead to more pain and back injuries in the long run and even lead to surgery.
